Project Runway – Marquise Foster

We were lucky enough to interview Marquise Foster, a contestant in the up and coming season 18 of the hit Television Show Project Runway.

  • 1. Tell us about yourself?

My name is Marquise Foster I was born in Louisiana but raised in Oakland California, I am currently 30 years old and I live my life as a fashion designer/ fashion teacher to high school students.

  • 2. Have you always had a love for fashion, or was it something you discovered later?

My love for fashion started when I was 17, it was something that I enjoyed as a teen having a different style and standing out amongst the other students I went to school with. I didn’t get into designing clothes until my senior year in high school, I enrolled in a fashion merchandising class that opened my eyes to the world of fashion.

  •  Who is someone that inspires you and your work?

A lot of people inspire me like seeing random people walking down the street, or seeing random carpet moments on social media. I get inspired and want to create items for people who I look up to and influence my vision of how they should wear clothes.

  • What is your favorite piece that you have designed?

My favorite piece that I have created so far is a green wool men’s suit with pearl and gold metal details. All of the details were hand sewn on which allowed me to step out side of my comfort zone and try something new.

  • What is your favorite memory that your work has helped you achieve?

My favorite memory so far has to be making it on season 18 of project runway. To be a self taught designer and make it on a show like that is an amazing achievement.

  • If you were not working in the fashion industry, what would you be doing?

If I was not working in fashion I probably would be a cook or working in the health field which I worked in before beginning my career as a fashion designer.

  • If you could, who is someone that you would love to collaborate with on a design?

I would love to collaborate with Thom Browne or Karl Lagerfeld when he was alive. Karl is someone I inspired to be as a fashion mogul and wanted to follow his foot steps in becoming a long standing fashion brand.

  • What is some advice that you would give to young designers just starting out?

One advice I would give to young designers would be to stay focus on your designs and never let anyone tell you that you aren’t good enough to make clothes. Starting off can be hard but with time and patience you can for sure make a name for yourself in fashion.

  • What did you enjoy most about being on Project Runway?

I enjoyed my cast mates the most on the show, the bond that we have developed is so amazing and we all went through the same experience on the show, I wouldn’t change that feeling for anything in the world.

  • Where do you ideally see yourself in the next 5 years?

In 5 years I see myself creating more collections across the world and being able to have more of a household name. I’m looking forward to the future of the MF brand.
