Be Yourself – Sam

We were lucky enough to chat with contestant Sam Be Yourself on Netflix’s Rhythm+Flow, the hip-hop style reality television series. Check out our interview below:

  • Tell us about yourself:

I’m Sam Be Yourself, I’m 25, a musician, and music and sports are my life

  • Were you always interested in the music industry, or did you find it later in life?

I’ve always been interested in music since the age of 8 when I first learned to play guitar.

  • Who inspired you and your work?

Nas, Jay Z, Kanye West, Eminem, Drake, MF Doom & Gucci Mane are some of my biggest inspirations in hip hop

  • Tell us about your experience on Rhythm+Flow and working with Netflix:

The experience on Rhythm + Flow was exhilarating. Watching your dreams come true right before your very eyes is a surreal feeling. It was amazing to work with Netflix as they were conscious of how to preserve the true nature of hip hop within the show

  • Who was your favourite celebrity judge on Rhythm+Flow and why?

TI was my favorite judge because he is an OG that’s been in the game for so long and he was able to apply his wisdom and knowledge of how the game used to be but is still very present with today’s music climate and was able to give meaningful critiques.

  • What is your absolute favourite album, and a single from that album, and why?

Illmatic by Nas is my favourite album, my favourite line is ‘Cause when I blast the herb, that’s my word I be slayin’ them fast, doin’ this that and the third. But chill, pass the Andre, and let’s slay I bag bitches up at John Jay and hit a matinee.’  Illmatic is what made me fall in love with hip hop

  • What is some advice that you would give young artists just starting out?

That everybody has to start somewhere, when people tell you your music is trash–keep going, when you forget your lyrics and have a bad performance– keep going, that moment when you want to give up and throw in the towel get back up and go harder than you ever have.

  • Who is someone you are dying to collab with?

Ty Dolla $ign, Nas, & Drake.

  • If you weren’t in the music industry, what would you be doing?

Still working with music in some sort of capacity, whether that’s working at a music equipment store, music teacher, record store—anything that has to do with music in some form or facet.

  • Where do you see yourself ideally in five years?

I see myself Grammy nominated.
